Great Equatorial: David Bedford

A sound installation of an iconic piece by David Bedford, Great Equatorial, that was commissioned for the reopening of the Royal Observatory in Greenwich. The highly atmospheric piece will be diffused through speakers in Pontio’s impressive public spaces.


David Bedford was born in London in 1937 and went on to study at the Royal Academy of Music with Lennox Berkeley. He received commissions and performances by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, English Sinfonia, English Chamber Orchestra and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, together with festivals such as the BBC Proms, Aldeburgh, Harrogate, Spitalfields and HCMF. Bedford was also a pioneer in music education, which ranged from small pieces for pupils with little or no musical knowledge to 7 school operas. Alongside his composing career he is known for his collaborations with musicians from the rock and pop world, which includes cult band ‘The Whole World’ and as arranger for Mike Oldfield, Roy Harper, Madness, Billy Bragg and Elvis Costello.
